Best of 2015

The new year is almost here.  Happy 2016 everyone!  It's time to look back and reminisce on some of my favorite lunches from this year.  I picked my favorite bento from each month to share with you.  And, well, since it is 2015 I needed 15 lunches to share so the last three lunches were picked by popularity via my blog statistics.  For complete details of the bento lunch click the title to be re-directed to the original post.  Let the countdown begin!

Why?  Because I love that cheese ticket!

Peanuts themed bentos always turn into favorites around here.

I love how all the colors work together in this fun pumpkin lunch.

A really easy but super fun to eat lunch.  And look at that cute fork!

August brought a very exciting time for me.  My book - Happy Bento! was published.

We love Shark Week and this was one of my son's favorite lunches of the year!

I made this one for the 2015 Bento & Co bento contest.

I made cute little Baby Groot as a mock up bento for the MomoCon bento workshop.  I was a pannelist at the workshop this year, so much fun!

I picked this one because I love those vibrant Earth Day-ish sprinkles on the banana & vanilla wafer sandwich cookies.

I picked this one because I love the photo of the bento laying on the cover of the book.

I made this lunch for the Lunar New Year.  I also entered it into Bento USA's cute character contest this year and came in 5th place.

It's the Super Bowl!  What more can I say?!

Most popular posts of 2015

In third place - baseball onigiri bento

In second place - Baymax onigiri bento
I can't argue with statistics, this bento is also one of my own personal favorites.

In first place - Star Wars
This bento quickly rose to the top because of all the Star Wars excitement this year.

Looking forward to what 2016 will bring :)

Happy New Year!

The 12 Days of Christmas in Bento

I wanted to make 12 Days of Christmas themed bentos last year but never had a chance to do it.  This year it was my priority, hence why there were not that many Christmas lunches posted this year.  I have been working on this series all month long.  I did have the aid of a set of 12 day of Christmas cookie cutters and also a 12 days of Christmas cupcake kit, although neither of them were used in all the bentos.  Ok, Let's get to it!!

♫♪ "On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree..."

In the 1st day of Christmas bento - partridge in a pear tree PB&J sandwich, grape tomatoes, rainbow carrots, and pear slices accented with a bird (will say he's a partridge) party pick.  This bento is packed in our LunchBots trio.

♫♪ "On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me, two turtle doves..."

The two turtle doves bento is made up of a turtle dove (x2) stamped PB&J sandwich, grape tomatoes decorated with a Christmas tree pick, and red gapes with a cucumber "2" on top.  This lunch is packed in one of our EasyLunchboxes classic containers.

♫♪ "On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me, three French hens..."

Two French hen hard boiled eggs, baby carrots, red grapes with a music note pick poked in, and blackberries accented with a hen pick (the 3rd of the French hens) make up the 3rd day of Christmas lunch.  Everything is packed into our PlanetBox shuttle.

♫♪ "On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, four calling birds..."

Inside this bento - red & green grapes with a bird pick (calling bird #1), waffle cut cucumbers, bean & cheese burritos with 3 baby calling birds made from cheese, and fruit snacks.  This bento is packed up in our bus bento box.

♫♪ "On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five golden rings..."

The fifth day bento has 5 mini yellow pepper rings on top of rice & a layer of black beans (on the very bottom), raspberries, and grapes complete this lunch.  The grapes & raspberries are decorated with a golden jingle bell - because it's gold and it rings!  Everything is packed in a book bento box.

♫♪ "On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, six geese-a-laying..."

I may have *cheated* here a little.  I wanted to be sure and display the 6 geese, however, when sent to preschool the lunch contained 3 little goose sandwiches but there will still 6 pieces of goose shaped bread.  The final lunch was made up of 3 geese PB&J sandwiches, green grapes, quail eggs (because our geese are a-laying!), and raspberries all packed in our Yumbox Panino.

♫♪ "On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me, seven swans-a-swimming..."

The swan-y swan lunch contains red raspberries, cheese crackers, jelly beans, grape tomatoes, a PB&J swan shaped sandwich, and clementine wedges.  Six of the seven swans are made up of swan picks.  The swans are swimming inside a Yumbox.

♫♪ "On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, eight maids-a-milking..."

The 8th day turned out being my favorite lunch of the series :)  This lunch contains 8 little sausage maids (I used this sausage/wiener cutter set) on top of leftover rice, blackberries embellished with a cow pick, pumpkin cookie butter dip inside a pail cup, and apple slices.  This cute little bento is packed up in our LunchBots trio.

♫♪ "On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, nine ladies dancing..."

Packed in a PlanetBox Rover - salami slices, dancer shaped tortilla, pear slices, waffle cut cucumbers, a couple of blackberries, and mini pepper rings.  The lunch is decorated with vintage dancer picks & paper Nutcracker ballerina picks.

♫♪ "On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, ten Lords-a-leaping..."

For the ten Lords-a-leaping lunch a PB&J sandwich Lord leaping over a Babybel cheese with the number "10" cut out of the wax, watermelon shaped Lords (we will pretend that there are 8 in the compartment - I think I only was able to fit 6 shhhh!), and pepper rings with a "Lord" cupcake pick.  This lunch was also packed in our EasyLunchboxes.  The watermelon cut outs were done with this toast cutter.

♫♪ "On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me, eleven pipers piping..."

By far the hardest of the 12 days of Christmas!!  I ended up packing quail egg "pipers" with toothpick pipes.  The eyes and bow tie are punched out of nori with this nori punch and a few of the pipers are wearing hat picks.  The rest of lunch is made up of alternating slices of watermelon and cucumber topped with a stocking shaped watermelon and baby carrots.  This bento is packed in our two-tier house bento box.

♫♪ "On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, twelve drummer drumming..."

The final bento is made of 12 frozen "meatball drums", marinara sauce sprinkled with oregano, cheese crackers, blackberries, and raspberries.  This lunch is a little bit of a stretch.  I originally planned to attach little drummer picks behind the meatball drums but time was short and the meatballs were frozen so the drums without drummers had to do.

Merry Christmas!

In this bento:  frozen mini waffles, syrup, clementine wedges, raspberries, and quail eggs.

"The Force Awakens"

In honor of the new Star Wars movie, I made my son a quick Star Wars themed bento for school lunch today.  We can't wait to see the movie and are planning to go on Tuesday :)

In this bento:  cheese crackers in the Darth Vader container, watermelon balls, and a ham & cheese sandwich stamped with Chewbacca's head.

The Darth Vader treat container fit great in our yubo.  I did have to use a alternate ice pack to provide a little extra room for Darth Vader.

The Star Wars cookie cutters set is currently for sale at Williams-Sonoma - woo hoo! - buy them while you can!!  The Clone Trooper rings you can find on eBay.

I will be posting the remainder of the Christmas themed lunches next week so be sure to check back.
