Chinese New Year ~ 2014 Year of the Horse

Happy Chinese New Year!  Welcome to the year of the horse.  I had a genius moment and came up with a plan on how to incorporate my leftovers on Fridays meme with a Chinese new year theme ;-)

In this lunch:  Leftover Chinese food (mushroom chicken), horse shaped white rice, and red pepper letters (CNY short for Chinese New Year) and numbers (2014).  The horse's eye is a black sesame seed.

I also sent a horse cookie packed in the monbento box's lid along with a Funkins napkin and fork.

Mickey Mouse in Monbento Square

I have been searching for a square bento box to add to my ever growing bento stash and it just so happens that monbento has recently added one to their collection.  They were super gracious and sent me their monbento square to try out.  When it arrived from France, I had to use it immediately :-) An official review to come soon!

In this lunch:  Strawberries, waffle cut cucumbers, club crackers, grape tomatoes, and peanut butter in the Mickey Mouse cup.

*I only used one tier of the monbento square box to pack this lunch in.

E is for Egg & Elephants

Getting back to our alphabet themed lunches,  today we have the letter "E" which not only stands for elephant but also egg.

In this lunch:  Cheez-Its, "E" turkey sandwich, red pepper strips, black olives, a hard boiled "egg", strawberries, baby carrots, and a couple of blackberries.

I do not have a letter E cookie cutter so I just hand cut the sandwich with my knife, easy peasy :-D

Hello Kitty Peanut Butter Sandwich

Friday was National Peanut Butter Day.  My daughter celebrated with a Hello Kitty peanut butter sandwich.  I have been seriously slacking with lunch making lately.  I routinely pack lunches the night before but recently I have been waiting until the last minute and have been packing lunch in the morning.  That's why I am sharing our peanut butter sandwich after the fact :(  I hope I get my lunch packing groove back soon!  Happy belated National Peanut Butter Day.

Top box:  Fruit medley of strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, and blackberries.

Bottom box:  Hello Kitty stamped peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich.

The Hello Kitty sandwich and snack container were found in Target dollar spot last summer.

Bookworm - Leftovers on Fridays

I have been eyeing this book bento for a while now.  I finally broke down and bought it even though I really do not need any more bento boxes right now.  I thought it would be fun to pack a bookworm inside the book bento.

In this lunch:  blueberries, a few edamame tucked in, red bell pepper slices, and a burrito made with leftover rice and black beans decorated with a black bean worm.

Winnie the Pooh

Today, Saturday January 18th, is A.A. Milne's birthday!  To celebrate, we made a Winnie the Pooh themed lunch.

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like, What about lunch?”
― A.A. MilneWinnie-the-Pooh

In this lunch:  Cheez-its, Tigger and Winnie the Pooh turkey sandwiches on Italian bread, grape tomato balloon, blueberries, blackberries, and cucumbers.

“Nobody can be uncheered with a balloon.”

Leftovers on Fridays - Cats

Happy Friday!  I recently got a few new bento toys tools, among them were dog and cat picks.  When my daughter saw the cats she needed them in her lunch!

In this lunch:  Leftover meatballs with sauce, corn, blackberries, cat shaped cucumbers, and pretzel goldfish (the cats need something to eat after all!).

Lunch packed by my preschooler

My daughter was home sick last week and to pass some time she decided to make her own lunch for when she returned to school.  She really did make this lunch by herself with very little assistance from me.  It, of course, ended up being a Hello Kitty themed bento.  She picked the food, the box, the cups, the picks, and arrange the food inside the box too!  The only thing i did was cut the vegetables with the crinkle cutter.  Not to shabby for an almost 5 year old :)

In this lunch:  Turkey, black olives, pepperoni, a banana, cucumbers, blackberries, and carrots.

Sea Creature Waffles

I came across a unique waffle maker at CVS while out doing some Christmas shopping on black Friday.  I, of course, had to have it.  But really, who can resist sea animal shaped waffles!!

In today's lunch:  Trader Joe's sweet basil pesto sausage, blackberries, sea animal shaped pumpkin waffles, and maple syrup in the blue sauce cup.

Winter Penguins

Well, so much for preschool this week.  After just one day we have come down with the flu :(  No new lunches this week but I decided to post a back logged lunch.  I figured it was fitting since the majority of the country is dealing freezing sub-zero temperatures.

Left box:  Snowflake tortilla sandwich with ham and prosciutto.  Sugar snap peas and baby carrots are underneath the sandwich.

Right box:  3D apple penguin, 3D cucumber tree, red grapes, pistachios, pretzel goldfish, and sugar snowflakes.

Bottom:  Trader Joe's gummy penguins on top of an "iceberg" (actually the box's top tier lid).

I love that this bento box has a dome shaped lid.  It allows plenty of room for the 3D food creations.

Happy New Year bento

Hopefully everyone is still enjoying the new year.  Tomorrow preschool FINALLY resumes.  Although New Years Day has past, I still wanted to do a New Years themed lunch for the first bento of 2014.

In this lunch:  Orange slices as the clock (the hands are cut out of the orange peel), grape tomatoes, turkey sandwiches on Italian bread (one is a smiley face sandwich to represent "happy" and the other has "new year" stamped on it), carrot confetti, and a banana.  The year was stamped on the banana with my number cutters from this set.  To leave a stamp on a banana just push on the cutter with enough pressure to leave an imprint and then it will brown after a couple of minutes.

This lunch is packed in my yubo lunchbox.  If you are in the market for this lunchbox click here for a discount code of $5 off a  $29 or more purchase to use at getyubo.com.

Juice in the Box Review & Giveaway

Juice in the Box was kind enough to send me two of their reusable drink boxes to try out.  As you all know I am always in search of newer and better designed products for school lunches.

Juice in the box is a completely reusable, dishwasher safe drink box.  It comes in five different colors:  red, orange, blue, green, and pink.  Juice in the Box is made from BPA and Phthalate free Tritan.  Tritan is very strong and virtually unbreakable and can stand up to any abuse your kids may throw at it.

Juice in the Box's unique design holds suction and allows your child to get ALL the drink out of the container unlike other brands!

See diagram below for all the special features of Juice in the Box.

I personally love the square design!  It makes it easy to fit in any lunch box or lunch bag. It is spill proof when the lid is closed. With Juice in the Box you know what your child is drinking versus those juice boxes that you buy at the store.  Another plus,  the hard shell makes accidental squeeze spills impossible.  Most store bought juice boxes have 6-7 oz of juice inside.  Juice in the Box holds 8 oz of liquid.

At our house, Juice in the Box is kid and mom approved!

Let's start the new year off with a giveaway!  Juice in the Box has offered to give away a drink box to one of my lucky readers.  Winner chooses which color they would like.  This giveaway is open to U.S. and Canadian residents.  Please enter the giveaway widget below and follow the instructions.  Entries that do not fulfill the requirements will be deleted.  Giveaway ends 1/8/14.  Winner will be notified via email on 1/9/14 and has 48 hours to claim prize.  Good luck & Happy New Year!!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

This product is available at juiceinthebox.com or on Amazon.

Disclosure - All product opinions are my own and are based on my own use of the product. All product information is from the Juice in the Box website or product pamphlet. I received two Juice in the Boxes in exchange for this review.
