NHK - BENTO: The Global Lunchbox Project

NHK was re-running the show BENTO:  the global lunchbox project today.  It originally aired in September.  I found it on YouTube today and wanted to share it with all of you that may have missed it.  The video is 45 minutes long and features a variety of bentos and bento artists from around the world.  For those of you still wondering exactly what bento is, this program will answer your questions :)  I am mentioned in it around 35:20.  Enjoy!

Christmas Stockings

Last Christmas bento of the season.  I made this one last week before Holiday break.  Hot dogs were on the menu for school lunch, I packed a slightly healthier option using an Applegate hot dog.  "If you can't beat them join them!" ;)

In this bento:  Rice, Applegate hot dog stockings (lollipop and candy bento picks added for decoration), holiday shaped goldfish, and green grapes.  The idea of the Christmas stockings came from Bento Monsters.  She used little sausages to make her cute little stockings.

It's the time of year when the sun is "sleeping in".  The sun is barely shinning before we leave the house in the morning.  The result is dark photos that need to be retouched and despite my best efforts are still blurry and grainy.  Time to pull out the light box :-/

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I will be back right before the end of the year with the annual "best of" round-up post.

Christmas Bentos with Quail Eggs

I have been in pursuit of quail eggs for quite some time.  They always look so adorable in traditional charaben bentos.  I was able to find some canned quail eggs at an Asian store I stopped at while we were away for Thanksgiving.  I bought some for us to try and last night we finally took the plunge and opened the can and introduced them to the kids as "baby eggs"  Without hesitation they tried them and loved them.  Hurray!  Now I have the green light to use them in bentos.  Presenting my first quail egg bentos :D

Christmas Snowman

In this bento:  Festive colored cheese tortellini,  raspberries in a Christmas tree shaped silicone cup, baby corn, carrot sticks, and a quail egg snowman.  The snowman is decorated with black sesame seeds, small piece of carrot, and a top hat pick.

Christmas Presents

In this bento: quail egg presents (I sacrificed a tortellini to make the ribbon and topped the eggs off with a bow pick), holiday shaped pretzels, peanut butter and jelly Christmas bulb sandwiches (stacked on top of each other), and raspberries.

I HAD to pack this lunch in our book bento box ;)

Grilled Cheese Gingerbread Man

A couple of Gingerbread man/woman lunches for today.  I wanted the sandwiches to keep their crunchy texture in the lunchbox so I made sure to pack the sandwiches with items that do not need refrigerated so that I could skip the ice pack.

In this bento:  Grape tomatoes, gingerbread man grilled cheese sandwich, blackberries, raspberries, and a gingerbread man cookie.

In this bento:  Dill pickle spears, two grilled cheese gingerbread ladies, blackberries, raspberries, and a gingerbread lady cookie.

The blackberries and raspberries in both lunches are decorated with a little Disney (mickey mouse / daisy duck) gingerbread bento pick from Tokyo Disney.

Run, run as fast as you can!  You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man!!!
