Day Camp Lunch and Snacks

Preschool has been on hiatus for "winter break".  To break up some of the monotony of staying home, we sent our daughter off to gymnastics day camp for a day of play.  Normally, I only pack a lunch for her and preschool provides the snacks.  For gymnastics day camp you must pack a lunch and two snacks.

Bottom left (snack #1):  Snowflake Ritz crackers and peanut butter in the small pink container.

Top left (snack #2):  Grape tomatoes and edamame.

Right side (lunch):  Orange slices, cucumber slices, and leftover lasagna.

This lunch and snacks is packed in our round Hello Kitty nesting boxes.  These boxes were a gift to us and I have yet to find them available online.

Christmas Tree Pancakes

Fun and festive Christmas tree pancakes for lunch today.

Left side:  Christmas tree pancakes decorated with M&Ms and a Trader Joe's star cookie.  I colored the batter with my natural plant based food coloring, however, after I cooked the pancakes they turned brown color.  You can only see the green color on the sides.  In the green sauce cup is a little maple syrup.  I used this silicone baking ring to shape the pancakes into Christmas trees.

Right side:  Orange slices, sugar snap pea Christmas tree held together with a wooden skewer (I saw this idea on Wendolonia), and green grapes accented with a present cupcake pick.

This lunch is packed in my Ugly Children's Clothing Marius lunchbox.

Rudolph sandwich lunch

I ran across some Rudolph and abominable snow man lip pops at the Dollar Tree the other day and I could not resist buying them.  As a result you all get to see another Rudolph lunch this Holiday season.

In this PlanetBox:  Strawberries, whipped cream, Christmas gold fish, a peppermint, sugar snap peas, red pepper "berries", cucumber holly leaf and a Rudolph sandwich.  The Rudolph sandwich is made with turkey on Italian bread with pretzel antlers and candy eyes.  I decided to color the whole eye in with my food markers to help give the appearance of a doe-y eye.  However, this just made for a big mess the next day as the marker seemed to accelerate the melting process.  I ended up replacing the eyes in the morning.  A Rudolph lip pop was used to embellish the sandwich.

When I finished making the lunch I went to close the lid and guess what....it did not close.  The lip pop nose is too tall for the PlanetBox rover.  I did not feel like switching the lunch to a different lunchbox so I just pulled poor Rudolph's mouth and nose off and laid it on it's side.  I informed my daughter that she would have to place it back on when it was time for lunch....crisis averted sort of.....

FunBites Triangles Giveaway

FunBites added a new cutter to their product line a few months ago.  The new cutter has triangle shapes.  It stood up to my expectations of a FunBites product:  strong, sturdy, easy to use, and of course fun!  For more information on FunBites read my previous review.  I played around with the triangle FunBites and found that there are just enough triangles to make one large Christmas tree and two small Christmas trees.

In this lunch:  Applesauce, broccoli, and FunBites triangle Christmas trees!  The Christmas trees are turkey on sourdough bread.  I painted them with my plant based natural food colors to get the lovely evergreen color.  Pretzels were used as the tree trunks.  Not pictured is a mini dipper with cheese sauce packed on the side.

I used my photo editor to add the snow. I thought it looked a little more festive this way, but if you want a better look at what is in the lunch check out the photo below.

Which photo do you like best?

A special thanks to FunBites for sponsoring this giveaway.  Everyone has a chance to win your choice of FunBites cutter (squares, hearts, or triangles).  This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only.  Winner will be drawn on 12/18/13 and an email will be sent.  Winner has 48 hours to claim prize.  Failure to respond to email will result in a forfeit.  Enter the raffelcopter below for your chance to win.

Santa Baby!

♫ ♪ "Santa baby, just slip a sable under the tree for me.  Been an awful good girl, Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight!" ♫ ♪

In this bento lunch:  Santa shaped mashed potatoes, Christmas tree shaped cucumbers, fruit cocktail, snowflake Ritz crackers, prosciutto, and turkey.

To make the Santa shaped potatoes I scooped the mashed potatoes into my spring loaded cookie cutter then simply pressed down on a hard surface, then pushed it out into the silicone cup with the plunger.  The Santa cutter is from a Nordic Ware cookie cutter set that I found at Target last year.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer is kicking off the start of Christmas lunches for this year.  Although the show aired ridiculously early this year (before Thanksgiving!) we just watched it this weekend.

In this lunch:  Rudolph sandwich with ham and sourdough bread (I used a red dot pick for Rudolph's nose), pretzels, snowflake shaped cucumbers, sugar snap peas, and applesauce with holiday nonpareil sprinkles.

This lunch is packed in our Ugly Children's Clothing Marius lunchbox.  The Christmas tree cups were from a cupcake baking set, the cups are available on ebay.

WOWBUTTER Giveaway!

I used my WOWBUTTER today and made some homemade granola bars.  They turned out yummy!  At the bottom of this post you will have the opportunity to win 6 jars of WOWBUTTER for yourself. WOWBUTTER is a peanut butter alternative that can be used as a substitute for peanut butter in any of your favorite recipes.  For more information about WOWBUTTER read my review.

WOWBUTTER Chocolate Chip Granola Bars Recipe

2 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 medium ripe banana (mashed)
1/3 cup WOWBUTTER
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/3 cup honey
1 T milk
1/4 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a bowl, mix all dry ingredients together. In a second bowl, mix the wet ingredients. Combine the wet ingredients into the dry. Line a 8x8 pan with parchment paper (leaving enough paper to stick out the sides so you can easily grab it later when you are ready to cut up the bars). Bake for about 20-25 minutes.  Let cool completely before cutting into bars.
Yields 10 bars.

And here is my daughter's bento lunch featuring the WOWBUTTER homemade granola bar.....

In this lunch:  Blueberries, clementine wedges, black olives, carrots, sugar snap peas, goldfish, and of course the WOWBUTTER granola bar.

Happy Hanukkah

This year's Hanukkah started on November 27th and goes until Thursday December 5th.  Today is pretty much right in the middle of the Hanukkah celebration.  While we are not Jewish, I still thought it would be fun to make a little celebratory lunch.

In this lunch:  Pasta in a Star of David silicone cup, edamame, orange slices, and an apple dreidel with the Hebrew letter Hei.  The letter was made with the apple peel. The candle pick in the edamame is to represent the shamash candle of the menorah. Under the Star of David there is a tiny sauce bottle containing Kosher salt for the edamame.

I found the Star of David silicone mold at Daiso Japan.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

It is just not Thanksgiving without a little bit of Charlie Brown and Snoopy!  Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

In this lunch:  Leftover lemon chicken & rice soup, Thanksgiving turkey shaped toast, a clementine, and popcorn shaped cucumbers. The turkey is on top of a "serving platter" (plate from this set).   I cut the turkey freehand out of the heel of my sourdough loaf then toasted it to give it a roasted look.  The turkey legs are "glued" on with a little butter. I added bone picks to the legs for a more realistic look.

See you back on Monday, have a great holiday :)
